• Cereias Project - Center for Reintroduction of Wild Animals

  • The Cereias – Center for the Reintroduction of Wild Animals – located in Barra do Riacho, Municipality of Aracruz (ES), was founded by Aracruz Celulose in a partnership with IBAMA in 1993.

With the purpose of reintroducing the animals seized by IBAMA, the Environmental Police, or donated by individuals in their habitat, the center plays a major role in the conservation of biodiversity, in the combat against illegal traffic of the Brazilian fauna, and in environmental consciousness.

Animals captured and sent to Cereias receive veterinary service and proper feed in the appropriate physical space until they can return to nature. Since its foundation, Cereias has already received almost 73 thousand animals, 77% already returned to nature, 2% were transferred to other states, 19% could not resist to the traumas received and died, and 2% are currently under recovery at the Center.

Considered a national reference due to its structure, Cereias also carried out research programs in conjunction with universities in the areas of biology of species occurring in the State of Espírito Santo, preventive veterinary for wild animals, methods of reintroduction of species, and ecology of the wild fauna reintroduced.

Gafor is partner of this NGO since October 1999.
